Istria - Novigrad / Cittanova

Less developed than Rovinj or Poreč, Novigrad, or Cittanova in Italian (even the town's Tourist Association uses the double-barreled Cro/Ital name), is quaint and relaxing, with a plethora of yachts from Italy lining its marina in the summer. If you are staying in the interior and feeling the need to have a drink on the water, then Vitriol is a gem of a café for your waterside macchiato, spremuta, or vino bianco. Colorful, quaint, this is anti-Poreč , and just next door.

Hotel Cittar
Prolaz Venecija 1

This family hotel with 14 rooms immediately strikes you with its façade: a section of the old city walls. The location is in the very center, which means it has no sea views, but when do you get to stay in anything looking like this? Doubles run €114 in high season.

Nautica Hotel

The newest hotel in town, the Nautica is obviously trying to appeal to those arriving by boat, as arriving by car you are hard pressed to even see that it is a hotel, much less figure out where the reception desk is (in the central covered ‘hallway’ of the burgundy structure). However, it does have terrific views of the old town as you look across the boats moored in front. Rooms a bit nautical for our taste, but nonetheless we love stopping by for a drink on the seafront. Indoor pool, and rooms both with seaview and the somewhat misleading “garden” view – do cars now count as plants?

Vitriol
Ribarnička
+385 (52) 758 270
One of our favorite café bars – waterfront setting with a view across to a wooded peninsula, free WiFi, coffees, wines, fresh juice, and eye candy in the form of the wait staff. The clientele are a mix of visiting Italians and Slovenians along with young locals. The perfect stop after a day on the beach or roaming the interior.

CODE lounge & cocktail bar
Ul. Gradska Vrata/Via delle Porte 22a
With its barcode sign, the black and white, almost stark interior is no surpise. When you want a change from Vitriol, or just looking for something that feels less like a friend’s place and more like a bar, head to this place in the city centre about 50 metres from Hotel Cittar.

Galerija "Leut"
Velika ulica 8
+385 (52) 757-185
Small shop specializing in domestic specialities: wine, olive oils, grappa, and other Croatian (and more specifically, Istrian) gifts.
