Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia

Novi Sad is a pleasant, quiet city in Vojvodina (northern Serbia) where the influence of the long-present Hungarians is obvious as you stroll the old town, and from where you can easily explore the beauty of the Fruška Gora National Park.

All that changes for a short period every summer, when the EXIT music festival comes to Peterovaradin fortress, bringing some of the biggest names in music (this year including Lily Allen, Artic Monkeys, Moby, Carl Cox and tons of other bands and DJs) to Serbia, along with hordes of Eurokids and others on their European summer backpacking adventure. Held annually since 2000, in 2010 EXIT will turn Novi Sad on its head from July 8th to 11th with the likes of Crystal Castles, Royksopp, Mika, Missy Elliot, David Guetta, and many more.

Self-proclaimedly the only five-star hotel in Novi Sad (who gave them five?), this large hotel is much better than the name might indicate (you are thinking of a sprawling yugo-complex, aren’t you?). Pool in basement, large conference facilities, and comfortable (if tacky) rooms. They also have a sister hotel, the Leopold 1 (named for the Holy Roman Emperor, naturally), at Peterovaradin fortress.
